LLCC – Coytrahen Watercourse

Coytrahen WatercourseThe wooded watercourse in Coytrahen is a popular area with ramblers, community members, families, and dog walkers, whilst attracting visitors to Coytrahen. The watercourse is an established green area of natural beauty, boasting its ash, oak, beech and sycamore trees, and its mature, well established habitat growth. The residents take pride in maintaining the watercourse and come together to maintain its upkeep on a voluntary basis.

The wooden bridge used to access the watercourse was not suitable for disabled access, and despite community council efforts to maintain the bridge, it reached a point of complete disrepair. The community council had no option but to temporarily close the watercourse due to concerns for public safety. The community council aimed to make the area safe, accessible and sustainable by replacing the bridge, conducting a tree inspection and tree maintenance works.

Llangynwyd Lower Community Council applied to the Resilient Communities Capital Grant scheme to support these plans. Once approved, the community council could employ the services of a tree specialist to conduct the remedial work, removing dangerous trees and reusing the cut log to create habitat piles to encourage biodiversity. The bridge and pathway are now accessible, providing pedestrians with a safe walking route away from the main road.
