Newcastle Higher Community Council – Pheasant Fields

In March 2024, Newcastle Higher Community Council applied to the Community Feasibility Fund to support a community consultation and explore potential options for Pheasant Field in Pen-y-Fai, Bridgend. This green space is a vital recreational area that promotes community well-being and environmental sustainability.

To deliver this project, the Reach Team partnered with Newcastle Higher Community Council and engaged professional expertise to ensure a robust and inclusive process:
• Richard Newton Consulting Ltd was commissioned to conduct a community consultation and develop an options appraisal for enhancing Pheasant Field.
• Direct Access Ltd carried out an access audit, providing recommendations to improve accessibility for all community members.

The consultation process gathered valuable input from residents and stakeholders. The results identified three key priorities for improvement:
1. Install lighting to enhance safety and extend the usability of the field.
2. Fit picnic benches to encourage community gatherings and events.
3. Install accessible gates to ensure inclusivity for all members of the community.

Following the consultation and options appraisal, Newcastle Higher Community Council successfully secured a Resilient Communities Capital Grant of £10,000 and a Town and County Council Capital grant of £7,651. This funding contributed to implementing the identified improvements, along with additional facilities including a book stop, bug hotel and bird boxes. These works ensure Pheasant Field remains a sustainable and inclusive recreational space for the future.
