Pencoed Town Council – Memorial Garden
Pencoed Town Council is committed to enhancing public spaces that support wellbeing, inclusion and community connection. Recognising the potential of the small green space opposite the Council offices on Coychurch Road, the Town Council began work to develop the site into an accessible memorial garden, providing a peaceful place for reflection, remembrance and quiet enjoyment.
Pencoed Town Council received Resilient Communities funding to commission a feasibility study, which included an in-person consultation event and the development of multiple design options. Feedback demonstrated strong community support for transforming the space into a memorial garden, with a particular emphasis on accessibility, seating, planting and opportunities for memorial engravings.
The project comprised of key elements:
– Landscaping and pathway works to create a fully accessible route through the garden for wheelchair users, older residents and families.
– Installation of benches to encourage rest, reflection and longer visits.
– Memorial features, including engraved plaques, to allow residents to remember loved ones and respected community members.
– Tree and planting schemes to create a tranquil, green environment that supports biodiversity and wellbeing.
– New gates improving accessibility and safety.
Pencoed Town Council then applied for a Resilient Communities Capital Grant to support the delivery of the project. Following approval of the capital grant, the Town Council appointed local contractors to carry out the landscaping and installation works. The project was carefully phased to ensure safe access around the site throughout delivery. Wherever possible, local suppliers were used, supporting the local economy while delivering high-quality improvements.
The completed memorial garden represents the successful transition from funded feasibility work into community-led capital investment. The transformed space now provides an inclusive, attractive and calming environment that demonstrates a sustainable approach to community regeneration and long-term use of public space in Pencoed.
